Accompanied Pieces
(vocal ensemble plus piano, guitar, rhythm section, etc.)

*Vocal scores are available for each arrangement, plus individual rhythm section parts as per standard practice. I've included a computer midi file wherever an actual demo recording of my arrangement is not available. Accompanied "empty space" heard in any midi sequence indicates room for vocal or instrumental solos.*

Black Hole Sun (Soundgarden) - SATTB 5/4 jazz swing. An epic journey in 5/4 featuring a low tenor/high baritone lyric solo, a rubato a cappella intro, and a few ounces of metric modulation. Recording | Original Tune

Boogie Oogie Oogie (A Taste of Honey) - SATB disco/fusion with soprano and alto solos and a brief a cappella breakdown. Plus hand claps. Yes, a vocal jazz arrangement of a disco tune! Midi | Original Tune

Emmanuel (M. Kohl) - SATB swing funk/fusion. With optional jazz guitar unison on the melody. Essentially, a vocalese expansion of an original big band and combo piece that I featured in my senior recital. Originally written for The Blue Nomads, my combo at Amherst, and then expanded for my post-college vocal jazz quartet FourWest. Midi (midi plays the 16ths straight, so assume swing 16ths)

Fly Like an Eagle (Steve Miller Band/Seal) - accompanied TTBB plus solo for baritone, tenor, or alto. Swung pop/hip hop groove with smooth, reharmonized backgrounds. The dynamic bridge features multiple duets and odd times that lock together in a large-scale polyrhythm. Recording

Fosfero (M. Kohl, A. Rubenstein) - SATB uptempo Latin/fusion. Rousing, aggressive salsa-influenced showstopper with a silly, light-hearted lyric in Spanish. Ample room for improvised solos. Midi Live University Video Performance

Four (Miles Davis) - SATB medium/upswing. The jazz standard. Currently just a head trading solo moments between each voice section. Optional: an original vocalese solo. Midi Of Head | Original Tune

Fred's Life (Charlie Hunter) - SATB jazz/funk with a few incidental splits. My vocalese on a killin' Hunter tune. Features lyric solos for guy and girl, angular lines, and chord bursts. Equally cool with swung or straight 16ths. Open choruses for solos with bkgs. Midi | Original Tune

Hit That Jive, Jack! (Nat King Cole) - SATB medium/upswing with attitude. Features a chorus of sophisticated soli based on transcribed Russell Malone, Oscar Moore, and Nat King Cole solos. Recording

Oklahoma! Medley (Rodgers/Hammerstein) - SSA. Medley of songs from The musical Oklahoma!, including "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning," "The Farmer and the Cowman," "Surrey with a Fringe on Top" and the famous "Oklahoma" theme. Classic trio harmonization a la the Andrews Sisters. Midi

Ready to Go (Republica) - SATB medium swing in 5/4. Vocal jazz takes on an aggressive dance/pop hit from the mid-90s. Partial Midi | Original Tune

Road Song (Wes Montgomery) - SATB with alto splits. 4/4 Latin feel. My vocalese on this classic Wes standard features girl unisons, guy unisons, improv solos, soli interludes and bkgs. based on Montgomery's original guitar solo. One of my most popular charts. Also known as "O.G.D." Midi | Original Tune

Soul Finger (Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers) - SATB slow, greasy swing. Faithful vocalese on this classic straight-ahead blues. Open form for solos, with a brief shout-like interlude. Midi | Original Tune

Still Swingin' (Kevin Mahogany) - available in SATB and SATB-with-additional-splits versions. Groovy mid-tempo jazz/funk minor blues, equally cool in swing or straight 16ths. Includes transcribed Mahogany scat solo with optional duet harmony part for it as well as other open solos. Midi | Original Tune

Tell Me Something Good (Chaka Khan) - dirty soul/rock SATB with fierce alto solo. Includes straight-ahead jazz rhythm changes solo section. Recording

This Is What You Came For/Can't Feel My Face (Calvin Harris ft. Rihanna & The Weeknd) - a spicy, uptempo Salsa/Latin jazz fusion mashup with individual vocal solos and open piano solo. Available in SAATB, SATTB and SATBB. Midi

Winter of Time (A. Bergcrantz) - SATB slow Latin. My vocalese on a beautiful instrumental tune called "While My Horn Gently Weeps." The form offers two long choruses for vocal or instrumental solos with dynamic vocal bkgs., plus a full AABA vocal solitrading with upright bass in the fourth chorus. Lyrics speak of time, memories, and winter. Midi | Original Tune
